Educate Me: Essences

by Emily L. Foley

Welcome to a new series on Emily Suggests! Educate Me is going to be a recurring feature on the blog detailing a new concept, product or ingredient. First up, Essences!

By now, most of us are pretty comfortable with the idea and usage of serums, right? But, have you heard about the latest trend to hit our shores from Korea (you know those Koreans–skincare geniuses!)? Essences are a semi-new skincare category that are really starting to gain momentum. But what are they? And how do you use them?

What is an Essence?

An essence is a lightweight liquid that absorbs very quickly into the skin to deliver a dose of skin pampering ingredients, but also helps the rest of your skincare work better.

So in following the thinnest to thickest rule, essences should be applied after toner and before serum.

While essences are certainly not essential to any skincare routine, they are a luxurious addition that really make me feel like I’m treating my skin right. Need an extra dose of moisture? Murad Hydro-Dynamic Quenching Essence, it is. Skin looking a little dull? Lumene Bright Now Vitamin C Hyaluronic Essence will brighten and help fight signs of aging.

And since they are lightweight and quickly absorbed into the skin, they don’t feel like you’re adding an extra step, even though you are!
