The Strobe Lights Are Dancing, Dancing with the Stars

So chances are, you’ve heard about strobing–the latest, hottest trend in makeup–by now. But, what perhaps you don’t realize is it is really just a new (albeit cooler) name for something that has been around forever–highlighting.

The answer to why we are suddenly calling highlighting ‘strobing’ could be one of two things: 1) Highlighting is usually coupled with contouring, and by separating it, the collective we decided it needed a new name. Or, more likely 2) MUAs, beauty editors and bloggers are always looking for the next big thing to talk about, so someone just made up a catchy new name for an age-old beauty trick, and it was such a cool name that it really took off.

So how do you strobe? You simply apply highlighting products to the ‘high points’ of your face, or the parts of your face where the light naturally hits.

The High Points of your face are:

~ The tops of your cheekbones

~ Above your eyebrow from the arch to the outer corner

~ Below your eyebrow from the arch to the outer corner

~ The inner corner of your eyes

~ In between your brows and down the bridge of your nose

~ Your cupid’s bow

~ The apple of your chin

The benefit here is that it makes you look healthier and younger, and is a much more natural look than contouring. I have actually been strobing the heck out of my face since I’ve been pregnant, trying to fake that proverbial pregnancy glow that seems to be eluding me.

And here are some of my favorite highlighters to help you achieve the perfect strobing effect:

1. Charlotte Tilbury Dreamy Glow Highlighter
2. Benefit Cosmetics Watt’s Up! Cream-To-Powder Highlighter
3. Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminizing Wand
4. MAC Beauty Powder
5. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Duality

So, have you tried strobing, and are you loving the trend this summer?
